Ivor Thomas Rees
Ivor Thomas Rees of Swansea, Wales, was born in the Rhondda Valley, the son and grandson of Welsh coal miners. One grandfather became a well-known boxer who, towards the end of his career was knocked out by his young friend, Peerless Jim Driscoll, later world champion. Ivor is a retired minister of the United Reformed Church (formerly Congregationalist), who served both Welsh and English congregations in Wales, as well as churches in London, Epsom and Manchester. The Bishop of Swansea and Brecon appointed him to serve as Ecumenical Adviser to and member of the first College of Saint Mary [chaplains to the City of Swansea].
Since his retirement he still preaches regularly in Welsh and English. He plays an active part in the church and cultural life of the city of Swansea and for eighteen years he served on the Court of its university. As well as publishing five books in English and two in Welsh, he has contributed more than twenty articles to learned history journals in Wales. Ivor has travelled widely in Europe and the Middle East (including Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan). Included in his four visits to the United States are two summer pastoral exchanges: Milford, Mass (where he served too as guest chaplain to the Commonwealth's House of Representatives) and South Bend, Indiana, and he has preached in nine states. A visit to South Korea included preaching in four churches. His eight visits to the Holy Land include a two month sabbatical at the Tantur Ecumenical Institute. His other sabbatical was at Windsor Castle. In writing his books on Holy Week and Easter he has drawn on his own experiences in Israel/Palestine as well as his preparation to celebrate these festivals during his forty year ministry.
