Martha Brunell
MARTHA BRUNELL has been in ministry on a number of edges for over three decades. Her two daughters, now young adults, have been mentors in welcoming since birth. Her long standing city church in Saint Louis practiced a call to radical hospitality by remaining on the same city corner for 150 years, eventually giving away everything they had. She has accompanied others in seasons of profound transition and transformation through her work in end of life care and hospice and as the co-founder of a domestic violence agency. Both of these ministries have stretched and seasoned her understanding of hospitality. It has been a rewarding challenge in her teaching to commit to establishing and maintaining a quality of honest and safe space in classrooms, during workshops, and on retreat for diverse others who have gathered. She turns often to both gospel stories of Jesus’ signature hospitality and to the witness of the fourth century desert mothers and fathers for her own growth as one who hosts and one who is a guest.
