Richard Kieckhefer

Richard Kieckhefer has taught in the Religion Department at Northwestern since 1975, and has also taught at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary. He is interested generally in the religious culture of the Middle Ages, but more specifically in church-building (as a reflection of community life and culture) and the history of witchcraft and magic. Richard’s books have been reviewed in the Times Literary Supplement, the Times Higher Education Supplement, the English Historical Review, Church Times and more. His book, Magic in the Middle Ages, has been translated into nine foreign languages. He has traveled extensively in Britain and on the Continent. Richard’s title is the John Evans Professor of Religion (also Professor of History) at Northwestern and he is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
